Coachella just revealed their line-up at the wee hours of the morning with Childish Gambino, Tame Impala, and Ariana Grande as the headliners. Grande will be the fourth female artist to ever headline the festival. Last year, Beyonce delivered one of Coachella’s best sets ever, and prior to that, Bjork and Lady Gaga headlined. According to reports, Grande’s set at Coachella this year was meant to represent female empowerment.
TMZ’s Coachella sources said that the festival’s choice to have Ariana Grande headline was a conscious decision to showcase female empowerment. However, they did find the task to find a female headliner a bit daunting considering Beyonce’s set last year. Over the past year, Ariana Grande’s faced adversity and struggles yet still managed to bounce back. Everyone who was involved with picking the artists agreed that they believe Ariana Grande would be able to live up to the bar Beyonce set last year and felt her set would resonate with women especially.
“Ariana is inspirational, and millions of people, particularly women, will connect with her,” one of the sources said.
Another factor that played into the choice is the fact that Ariana Grande’s an international icon. The media’s coverage of her announcement proved that.
YouTube will be live streaming both weekends of Coachella. The festival will take place from April 12-14 and April 19-21.
